Running in Miami

Miami's running scene is concentrated in three or four neighborhoods, organized around a handful of recurring weekly meetups, and shaped almost entirely by the weather. The fall and winter months are mild and dry. The summer is its own discipline.

When to run: November through April is the peak season locally: cooler mornings, low humidity, and the busiest race calendar of the year. July through September is the hard stretch — high humidity through most of the day means most runners shift to early-morning starts (before 6:30 a.m.) and take the rest of the day off the road.

Where Miami runs cluster

A neighborhood-by-neighborhood read on where the scene is and what to expect when you show up.

Brickell

Dense, urban, and the most consistent place to find a run crew on a weeknight. The Brickell Key loop (about a mile) is the local Tuesday-night staple, and the Baywalk extends north from there toward Museum Park if you want to keep going.

South Beach

The Miami Beach Boardwalk is the headline route here, running roughly eight miles from South Pointe Park north toward Bal Harbour. Most South Beach clubs meet near Lincoln Road or Lummus Park on weekday evenings.

Coconut Grove

Quieter, leafier, and friendly to longer runs along the Bay Path. Local clubs run weekday evenings and Sunday mornings here; the tree cover makes it the most tolerable Grove route in summer.

Wynwood

Newer to the running scene. A handful of weekly social meetups have started here, often pairing a 5K loop through the arts district with a coffee or brewery stop at the end.

Key Biscayne

Reached via the Rickenbacker Causeway, with the best ocean breeze in the metro. Crandon Park offers miles of trails, and the Virginia Key loop adds another 4+ miles of off-road option for runners who want distance.

Coral Gables

Residential, tree-canopied, and where the Old Cutler Rd. bike path begins its long shaded run south. A common pick for hot-month long runs.

The routes locals actually run

Practical context, not a full route map. Combine these with the route detail pages below for turn-by-turn maps.

Miami Beach Boardwalk

~8 miles one-way

Paved, oceanfront, mostly open sun. Start at South Pointe Park for the most scenic stretch. Water fountains every mile or so. Best run before 7 a.m. in summer.

Key Biscayne via Rickenbacker Causeway

3–6 miles each way

Iconic ocean-view causeway, ocean breeze almost always present. Pair with Crandon Park trails for a longer run. Parking lots at the foot of the causeway and at Crandon.

Brickell Key Loop

~1.3 miles per loop

Flat, easy-access, popular for Tuesday-night clubs. Pair with the Baywalk for a longer run. Limited shade on the island itself.

The Underline

~2.8 miles (growing toward 10)

Linear park running under the Metrorail. Fully shaded, with neighborhood waypoints every mile. The most heat-tolerant option in the central metro.

Old Cutler Rd. bike path

~20 miles south

Heavily shaded most of the way. A staple for summer long runs. Start near Cocoplum Circle in Coral Gables.

Coconut Grove Bay Path

~3 miles round trip

Bayfront, partly shaded, easy on the legs. Common Sunday-morning route. Limited parking on weekends.

Virginia Key Trails

4+ miles of trail

Off-road option just past the Key Biscayne causeway. Mountain bikers and runners share the trails; expect to yield. Best at sunrise.

Annual races to put on the calendar

Recurring races local runners build their year around. Specific dates change; the months and vibes don't.

The biggest endurance event in Miami, drawing about 20,000 runners. Flat, USATF-certified course through the most photogenic parts of the city. Training searches start climbing in July.

Tropical 5K

January

Held the day before the Miami Marathon at Watson Island. A popular shake-out for marathoners and a low-pressure first race for beginners.

Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run

April

A team-based 5K through downtown that fills entire company rosters every spring. Casual, social, and the kind of race that gets people to their first start line.

Run Miami Beach

May

A waterfront 5K and 10K series on the Miami Beach Boardwalk, often the last meaningful race before the summer slowdown.

New to running here?

If you're brand new to running in Miami, three things help: pick a fall or winter start, find one of the many clubs that explicitly welcomes beginners (most do), and aim for a 6 a.m. weekday meetup before the heat builds. A specific goal race, even a 5K, makes the boring base-building weeks feel like they're for something.
